San Jose Quilt and Textile museum, Nov 2019

San Jose Quilt and Textile museum, Nov 2019

Knitted monsters around a palm tree.   There are knitters who are willing to put their stuff waaaay out there.  A few years ago a lot of the bike racks in my town got knitted covers.  Apparently there is such a thing as guerrilla knitting.  I like this version, especially because it is so large.

This is the arts district of San Jose and the sidewalk has mosaics inlaid.

I love a good pattern.

The museum is not that large but they are putting on three exhibits, each excellent.
The Know Your Meme exhibit is the one that finally got me to go.  A lovely group of friends went with and we had lunch after.  Since not everyone knows every meme, or even the Know Your Meme website, they had a hard copy explanation which I thought was a lovely addition.  Many artists contributed and I loved the variety of materials and techniques.

A personal favorite.  I've seen a couple different versions and have been tempted to do it myself.

The only cross stitch, my favorite needlework!

One of three.  Handwoven!  I should have put something for scale, this is about 4 feet wide.

Super helpful timeline.

One exhibit was devoted to this artist, Hollis Chatelain
This is all quilting, but a more modern style where she used the quilting to add texture. It is fascinating up close.

Then consider there was a whole room with over 10 of these.  So much work!  Can you rip out the quilting if you don't like how it ends up?  How often does she change thread color?  They all have patterned backgrounds too.

The third exhibit is a mix of materials/media and many of the items had a strong point of view.

Glass pipettes filled with colored beads and then stitched together.

Love these!  The embroidery on the pillows is fantastic.

Pretty curious about a technique that involves hand sanitizer.

Had a great time, plan to go back in February of 2020 when they have an exhibit on women scientists.

A few fun jigsaw puzzles, October 2019

A few fun jigsaw puzzles, October 2019

There is something about fall that just means it's puzzle time.  These puzzles waited patiently for just the right weekend.

First up a fancy wooden whimsey cut.  Look at all these tiny pieces!  First I sort by color.

It is easy to pick out the red

or white/yellow.

It is an art puzzle, so the whimsey shapes are super cute.

This was the easiest to put together.

Hunting by shape is pretty hard because the cutting is so tricky.  But at some point I ran out of interesting colors so had to do some shape hunting.  Luckily there are not too many pieces.

The end result is gorgeous.

The next one is the front page of the New York Times from a personally important date in history.

First sort by pieces with a picture, pieces with large font and just regular type.

On the day, Boris Yeltsin was making the news along with Clinton trying to reform his character and there was a fire in Brooklyn.

It was really easy to decide what to do next and fun to read as I went.

Finished!

Next puzzle is very very very tiny pieces.  Also woodcut, but small and light.

At least the the outside is easy.

The pieces snuggle up against one another-no snapping into place.  Not to hard to place using the picture and some shape hunting.

Finished.  So small!

Final puzzle of the weekend is the hardest.  600 pieces, double sided, odd shape.

Start with the outline but don't finish it completely before moving into colors,  Red!

Yellow then blue then faces.

Some areas were a little easier to spot.

This end took longer than the middle.

Do you have the theme yet?

Star Trek!  Fun shots of the most famous scenes and the crew.  The other side is the ship, 90% gray!  I'm not sure that is fun enough to do.

Loved it!  Would do this one again for sure.
