Hakone Gardens, January 2020, part I

Hakone Gardens, January 2020, part I

A local treasure, Hakone Gardens

I haven't been in at least a decade but am now adding this to visitors to-do list.

The garden was inspired by the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.  The one held in the Palace of Fine Arts up in San Francisco.

For some reason I was really into taking two pictures of the same thing.  One close-up and one further away.  Like the berries on this shrub.

Or the bamboo framed by the window.

Lots of pictures of trees

Fence construction is cool.  The intersection of poles is held together by wrapping strings.

I can't think of any other place I've seen a bamboo garden.  It showcased at least 3 different types of bamboo.

Left over root systems of bamboo

All so creepy looking!

Small field of short bamboo, all about knee high.

Tall bamboo on terraces.

The handrails in the bamboo garden are made of bamboo.

I know bamboo grows quickly, but these must be decades old.

Near the bamboo garden are some lanterns

Board Game Geek 2019, part II

Board Game Geek 2019, part II

I love most of Knizia's games and this is a super simple 2-player.

One person is water, the other land.  On your turn, place or turn a tile.

Ends up tricky, like an advanced version of tic-tac-toe.  We only played twice, not sure if it would become boring fast.  Maybe try again next year.

Disney Villainous is fantastic.  Totally asymmetric, but the rules are straight forward.  The design is delightful.

The library copy includes the expansions.  Jafar seemed a little bit of a miss, but I'd like to try some of the others.

Themed game!!  Looking for something to replace the old school Fireball Island.  This is not bad, not the best theming, but ok.

We did play it a little wrong and won when maybe we shouldn't have.

Pulled this out just to see.  Dexterity game, not really for my niece yet.  All the pieces are super cute.

The latest FF.  Super hard.  Seems like there may only be a few (one??) paths to winning.  Impressed by how much it feels true to the video game.

Another theme game.  We are just drawn to them :)

2 player, battle themed, deck building.  It plays 3 rounds and as you go your skills increase.  Totally works and more fun than I thought it might be!

Our yearly nemesis.  This year was particularly stressful, perhaps time to give it up.

Another replay from last year.

I still like the roll and write a lot.  May need more of a challenge with this one.

Bear Park!  Another repeat from last year, but again tetris-satisfying.

At this new location we get out of the hotel on a regular basis, super good!

The grassy knoll from farther away.

It is smaller than I imagined.  Next year we will check out the museum.

From the demo floor, a new version of The Captain is Dead, which I've played but can't quite remember.

Here you are fighting off insects.  Asymmetric play as each role has different strengths.

Was just okay for me, but I do appreciate that they made the basic crewman a red shirt to be mowed down.

From the demo floor, match tiles as you place them to get maximum points.

Nice enough, but not a purchase.

From the demo floor.  In retrospect I want to purchase this!  Adjacent to the Pandemic series, but with a time constraint. Extremely co-operative.

The game is the logistics end of Pandemic.  You produce and deliver goods, specializing in your asymmetric roles.

Repeat from last year!

Alphabetize the books, make a nice structure, fulfill your unique quest.  Satisfying to those who like to plan :)

The hotness from last year that we didn't get in on.

Strange concept, making potions with some exploding ingredients. A bag building game, you purchase the little cloud shaped ingredients and draw randomly from your bag.  A bad random draw start is mitigated by a nice catch-up mechanism.  We played twice and would happily play again.

Replay Villainous!

Ra has been around a long time, but this was my first play through.

Too much of a bidding game for it to become a favorite, but interesting for the way some parts caryy through the rounds.

From the demo floor.  It was the hotness last year and was too mobbed to get in.  They gave us the short version.  Pretty cool.

Unlike any other game I've seen, you are in a relationship and to win each person has to achieve goals, one of which might be to break up.

Didn't get a picture of Letter Jam, one for word loving folks.  It was the last we played and brains were very fried, try again next year.
Or Ecos, in the hot new games.  It was kind of cool, some really nice components and it has the possibility of simultaneous play.  But it dragged a little for us and the point swing can be wild.  On the plus side we taught some others to play after us and got homemade beef jerky.

We played over 25 games in 4 days and had an excellent time doing so!  See you next year!!
