Elephant Seals 2019

Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo State Park 2019

Elephant seals are strange creatures and difficult to see in the wild...except at the few beaches where they come to mate and give birth.  We happen to be close to Ano Nuevo State Park and it has been on my list for years but you need to take a tour and those are often booked up so you have to plan.  Finally one of my friends took the lead and got a big group of us a Saturday tour.  All photos are thanks to my friends!

It's an easy walk from the station out to the beach, just a few little sand dunes.

The younger males who don't have a harem basically just stay out of the way.  Of course that means they are sometimes on the path.  They don't really care about the humans, but no need to fuss them so we take alternate paths.

At the shore are the groups.  Mainly they are sleeping but there is such a large group that there is always some action somewhere.

Old lighthouse station

The new pups hang out pretty close to mom.  They grow at a tremendous rate, but it still takes weeks for them to get to the point they can go it alone.

Cracks me up!

If the mating attempt is by one of the young upstarts, the alpha will come rushing over to drive him away.

Always need to know what the poop looks like ;)
During the mating season they don't eat so there is very little poop around.

If you are in the area for elephant seals you may as well stop off for pie!  Duarte's is famous for their cream of artichoke soup and

PIE!
They have a James Beard award for being an American Classic restaurant and they haven't needed to change anything.  There might be a wait on the weekend, but it is worth it.

Seattle: MoPOP and Tunnel Ride Feb 2019

Seattle: MoPOP and Tunnel Ride Feb 2019

Seattle has a Museum of Pop Culture MoPOP...who knew!  It is crammed full with interesting exhibits-way more than I expected.
Lots of music exhibits, which we didn't see, but we did walk past the giant central art piece.  A fountain of music?  All instruments, mostly guitars, some funky ones, worth a long look.

We happened to be there for the Marvel Superheros exhibit.  Very nice mix of original artwork, first edition comics, movie props and made for the exhibit statues that were perfect for taking pictures.
The new Ms. Marvel!!!!  I love these new comics!  Her story is more complicated-it includes some teenage coming of age bits, and immigrant parents/social life on top of the complications of becoming a superhero.

Original old school!

Super cute set up so you can sit near The Thing

Hanukkah card from The Thing!

There was a whole section on indie video games that let you play the games.  We had to play Overcooked-lol!  If you haven't heard of it, you need at least 2 people to run this kitchen-make soup or burgers by prepping ingredients, cooking, plating, and washing dishes.  But the people are separated physically and have different tools.  So I might be the only person with access to onions for the onion soup.  It can get stressful but if you figure out how to work together it is satisfying!

Sci-Fi and Horror section.  Again full of props from movies and tv shows.  But also some nice informational sections.
One wall explained the differences between your common creepy beings, vampire vs shapeshifter vs demon etc.

Another exhibit devoted to fantasy.  Filled with props, objects, video interviews

Fun!

Old school D&D

And of course you can't forget the gift shop.  Excellent selection of t-shirts and lunch boxes.  Was almost tempted by this beauty of a Star Trek lunch box...but I would never use it :(

We were in town this particular weekend so that we could do the Tunnel Ride.

Seattle has been replacing their viaduct with a tunnel.  It's taken awhile but it is finally done and folks are excited.  This first weekend the city is letting the runners (Saturday) and cyclists (Sunday)  use the viaduct and tunnel before the cars.

Look how happy I am at the beginning of the ride.

If you get lost, meet back here.  Most of the riders look exactly the same-yellow jackets, black pants.  We try to stand out :)

We all look happy to be here.

The tunnel is so fresh and clean!

So many cyclists!  The event sold out-12,000 cyclists!  Such a nice variety too, family groups, oldsters, recumbent bikes, 3-person tandems.  And all polite, everyone just enjoying the ride

Of course the weather was not the best...but just a light misting.

Okay, now I am a little tired.  But we must point to the things.

Better pointing at things.

OMG  Tater tot nachos.  Brilliant.  Lunchbox labs-cute decor, great staff, and tasty, tasty tater tots!

BGG (Board Game Geek convention) 2018 part II

BGG 2018 part II

BGG is a friendly convention and some of the best times are with random chance strangers.  A couple guys passed us as we were opening up Heaven & Ale and joined us for a game.

A little too long for my usual game night, but nicely thought out.  Go around the board to pick tasks, so there is some competition in one area

but everyone manages their own fields so not completely cut throat.  You can end up with quite different strategies.

Final boards have a nice mix of resources.  I did well, but not sure exactly how-lol!

Relatively fast, lightly puzzle-y.  I was maybe too tired to have it sink in.

Competing for the candy (little wooden pieces-cute!) to fulfill orders...seems to be luck dependent, but you have to carefully evaluate which orders to abandon.  I don't love the art, but would play it in a different printing.

Another fast 2 player, not quite as memorable as pinata, but better art.

Great large group, risk taking game.  I am pretty bad-I don't take enough risks to win, but who doesn't love rolling the 30-sided die :)

Race your car around the track-burn the brakes, shred the tires and destroy the transmission just enough to not completely destroy the car.

Kind of cool new holder to keep track of what gear you are in and  how beat up your car gets.

Lets build parks for bears!

Using fancy tetris shapes-yeah!!  Right up my alley.  Super cute!

Patchwork regular is one of my favorite 2-player games so had to try this express version.

Cute, not really necessary if you already have the regular version, maybe a bit shorter for younger players.

Seems like a cute theme and the pieces are delightful

but the play is brutal!  Interesting twist is that you are cooperate with a team mate-best for 2 or 4 players.

I picked this up for the beautiful art

and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of strategy.  The theme works so well.  You, the koi, compete for dinner but are affected by the weather and currents.  Want to play again!

Can't miss this one!

Vul-kar!!!  This year there was a new printing that included improved game play...but at the convention I have to play the old school version.

Another game I picked because of the art.

Turned into a fascinating play through.  Plenty of competition for your spot on the tree, so trying to guess what everyone else is doing in huge.  The economist in our group played randomly...and duplicated my plays 90% of the time!  The 10% was critical though and I won decisively!

With these adorable meeples!  I think folks will either love or hate this one!

Hmm.  High replay value because of the randomization.  Not sure I completely grasped how to win.

Hot game!

Cute!  Squishy berries!

Cute but fiddly!  How well the game goes seems to depend on the initial draw...we actually restarted because the first was a poor start.  Likely too long for usual game night, but willing to try again next year.

Last day-just before heading home.  Our brains are tired, we can only play short/known games.

Love Ticket to Ride-this is the shortest version ever and well themed.  I can't justify purchasing it, but I might anyway.

Unique rules/cards for bidding.  Too much to fully comprehend at the end of the convention, willing to try again with a larger group.

Because it has shrunken heads-lol!

I am attracted to odd Japanese games, what can I say?!

This one is totally a party game-sound the cards out loud and follow the rules-other players call you out if you get it wrong.  So unusual!!

Another 'roll and write'

Looking like Dig Dug!!  Not quite as strategic as the others, but cute.

Final 'roll and write'!!

Plan the roads and rails for the town!  This one was so good we bought it :)

OMG  Such a good week-can't wait for next year!
