One of my favorite weeks-Board Game Geek convention. Thousands of games thousands of people to play them and meeting up with far away friends. If you want to get more into board games, or just want a peek at the world, check out BGG.
The BGG library is amazing-this is like 20% of it! E and I got up early to get in line for registration. It is not necessary, but there is something to be said for building up some excitement and getting first pick of the games. We had great chats with the folks in line with us and saw them throughout the week.
To start off the convention we picked a couple of new games very randomly off the shelf and liked them enough to play a couple times.
Tag City! A 'roll and write' (all the hotness this year)-you roll dice and then write on your wipe-off game board. You are putting tetris pieces onto your art space.
Finished products!
Found the best table ever just outside the library and kept going back-worse lighting, but better sound and easy to find.
Micropolis-let's help the ants build their tunnels!
Pieces have queens and soldiers and fruit
And in the end it looks cool! Plays very differently with different numbers.
Just when you think they can't make another new train game...
The dice are the train parts you need. Has a touch of Yahtzee since you re-roll what you don't use. I love that!
Which cards are you going to fulfill? Fast for a train game, might like to play with 6 to see what happens.
Could not resist this name. It is Japanese and silly and yet has a touch of strategy.
Each player starts with one vending machine, everyone takes and action and then passes the vending machine-how will your action affect the next person-can you mess with them buy taking out the money?
Not a lot of replay, but so fast I will want to play again next year.
Root!
This is all the hotness-asymmetric war game. Would benefit from having the same group learn the rules together and try different roles.
Caper-love love love the art work!
Design and copy is top notch.
Game is okay-fine idea, but a little thin so it won't get much replay for me, ah well.
Ex Libris was a hotness last year, finally got to it.
Indeed you are building your library and it better be alphabetical. Tricky because it is hard to move them around after placing. Would play again next year.
Even the score card has style. I should replay this to try some other strategies.
Reykholt was on the hot games-one of the few we were super interested in. By one of our favorite designers, this one is does not leave you in dire straits like Agricola.
Vegi-meeples are the best!
Grow vegetables in your greenhouse, then tear them down to get ahead. I like the mechanism well enough but I bet at some point you have the first couple of turns set in stone. Might also depend who you are playing with.
So! At the end of the night we will often grab a game to read to rules overnight. I have a young cousin who loves fishing, so I had to pick up Happy Salmon. Well! It turns out the rules take about 5 seconds to read and it is a silly, physical, do an action type game aimed at 4-year olds. Not something I spend a lot of time on, and yet we ran across more than one person who knows and enjoys it-glad I picked it up!
Tally Ho is one of our must-dos. I think I like playing it because I am terrible at it and feel like I should be better.
Though much depends on the randomization of the tiles.
Forbidden Sky has been on the list for awhile now! There is a series of them, co-op, with the possibility of big disaster.
We did not technically launch our rocket, but one turn away after not really getting the rules right is pretty darn close!
Often sold at Target!
Have heard a lot of good buzz around this one. Luckily we had someone familiar with the game to teach us. Good mechanism to keep it fresh...could be the new Puerto Rico for me!
Oh man, another one that we only play at the convention. Silly bar game that leaves everyone in a good mood.
Last year I played this too late in the evening to feel good about it-had to try again.
Better, but I don't love it like I feel I should *shrug*
Always have to try the new Friedman Friese fable game...I didn't love this one, but would try again with a larger group.
Ditto with this one-we only played with 2, but with the right group of 4 it would be a little logic puzzle.
Real time co-op, good filler, quite hard to win, bit of learning curve to see which players work well together.
