Forestiere Underground garden, Fresno, July 2021

Forestiere Underground Garden in Fresno is another of those places where someone had an idea, ran with it, made it their whole life.  (House on the Rock in Wisconsin and Coral Castle in Florida are the others that come to mind).

An underground house, with all the fruit trees planted in the house.

He had a background in digging subway tunnels in NYC.

Got lured to the outskirts of Fresno by the promise of good farming land.

But just under the soil was hard pack/stone.  Not good farming land at all.

So he built his house by digging out the spaces. Nook for the ice chest.

He also added as many fruit trees as possible.  His goal was to be able to reach out and get his fruit without ladders.  Love it!

To reinforce the walls he added whatever he could find.  Rebar and concrete mostly.  Pretty impressive that much of it is still in place.

and family members.

He knew how to graft.  This one tree had 7 different citrus!

The most amazing concept for the fishing pond, visible from 3 levels.

It really can't be used as intended anymore.

But this is a lovely substitute

The temperature underground is lovely.  This was one of the hottest days and above ground was so gross.

There is also a large meeting/dance hall above ground.  Very cute, includes info posters and items from around the farm.

Many of the family members worked here-giving tours and setting up wedding receptions in the hall.

Super cute!
