Patterns in French churches, June 2019
This post is a bit scattershot as it only looks at interesting patterns in the French churches we visited. There is a whole other post just on the churches.
A bit strange looking at first. Seems like there might be scaffolding on the front. Turns out to be modern and because they ran out of money got creative.
From the inside I don't even care about the stained glass, what I'm loving is the thinly sliced marble, making the whole area translucent. Wow.
Not enough money for full on stained glass but I like the simplicity.
Lovely patterns.
Amiens has a traditional cathedral.
Different tile patterns in each area!
Center labrinth!
Sorry for the glare-could not find an angle without it :(
Individually I love them, but it does get a bit much when they are all together.
St Joseph's church in Le Havre
Built to remind you of a lighthouse, since this is a port city.
Brick patterns on the outside! Le Havre has a cathedral that survived the bombings, but I don't think it is as interesting as
St. Joseph's church which was completely rebuilt in the 50s
Stained glass patterns on the inside.
No longer representational
but if you read up on it, there is meaning in the colors, shapes, and placement.
If pictures could do it justice, this photo would be at the top. Pictures just can't do it in this case. We stopped by on a bit of a whim but this turned out to be one of my top three spots in all the trip.
